October
25, 26 2003
A
celebration with the Keelboat is planned for the weekend of October
25, 26. This corresponds to the historical launching on
October 26, 1803.
William Clark joined Meriwether Lewis and the keelboat and the
two together left Louisville, Kentucky/Clarksville, Indiana on
that date. Since the selected site for the Exploratory Center
is on the Clark family's homeplace and birthplace of George Rogers
Clark, William Clark's older brother, we note that William and
George Rogers were together before the launching in Clarksville,
and they partied together in Clarksville prior to the launch.
Our next special event is Sunday, October
26 between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00
p.m. This will be the
"Launch" of the Keelboat and an unveiling of
preliminary plans for the Center. Since we now have in place a
40-year
lease on 16 acres at the north end of Darden Towe Park on which
to locate
the Lewis and Clark Exploratory Center, we will have something
to show.
Warren Byrd/Sue Nelson Landscape Architects and William McDonough
& Partners Architects are about to begin a preliminary planning
process and we will
display the results of those preliminary studies in a tent near
the boatyard
barn on October 26.
We will be inviting young people from the community to help us
pull the Keelboat from the barn and turn it over. There will be
a short
speech, apples, apple cider, pop corn, a tent with displays, a
band, a
blacksmith and other festive activities. People can walk our trail
to the
George Rogers Clark cabin if they wish.
See
"Keelboat" or Contact
Us for more information.
